Title: Senior Manager of Systems Engineering
Company:
RTX
Location:
Marana, Arizona, United States

Ahmed Abdelmawgoud, PhD, senior manager of systems engineering at RTX, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in defense and space manufacturing.

Dr. Abdelmawgoud has always been excited by taking concepts he learned in engineering, math and physics classes and applying them to real-world systems. For nearly 15 years now, he has built an esteemed career doing just that, with particular expertise in cutting-edge hypersonic technology and advanced missile guidance algorithms.

Beginning his journey immediately after graduating from college, Dr. Abdelmawgoud joined EControls as a manufacture engineer in 2012. While attending graduate school from 2013 to 2016, he contributed as a graduate researcher at The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering Unmanned Systems Laboratory. Concurrently, Dr. Abdelmawgoud held the position of research engineer at Southwest Research Institute until 2019. While affiliated with Southwest Research Institute, he aided in designing the world’s largest industrial robot — a project he still considers a career highlight.

In 2019, Dr. Abdelmawgoud accepted the role of senior systems engineer at RTX (formerly Raytheon Technologies Corporation). He was promoted to principal systems engineer in 2022 and has served as the senior manager of systems engineering since 2025.

Lauded for his hard work, efficiency and adaptability, Dr. Abdelmawgoud shoulders multiple important duties at the company. He leads both the guidance, navigation, and controls (GNC) team and the integrated product team, demonstrating his ability to assist with both technical and strategic issues. Dr. Abdelmawgoud also heads RTX’s innovation advocacy team, encouraging forward thinking throughout the organization. As one of the company’s subject matter experts in missile guidance, he is responsible for imparting essential knowledge to new engineers to prepare them for the job.

Recognizing the importance of teaching and mentorship, Dr. Abdelmawgoud has been an adjunct professor at The University of Arizona since 2020. He has taught courses such as “Advanced System Dynamics,” “Aircraft Performance,” “Aircraft Stability and Controls,” and “Control System Design.” Although teaching is only a part-time job for him, Dr. Abdelmawgoud deeply values it and aims to ensure that students learn the fundamental engineering skills they will need to succeed in their own professional aspirations. He fondly recalls moments when past students have returned after taking his class and have expressed how much he helped them.

The impact Dr. Abdelmawgoud has had on students wouldn’t be possible without his own strong education. His academic journey was centered on The University of Texas at San Antonio, beginning with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2012. Dr. Abdelmawgoud then obtained a Master of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2015. Subsequently, he earned a PhD in electrical and electronics engineering from the same institution in 2019.

To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Abdelmawgoud has been celebrated with a number of notable accolades. While studying at The University of Texas at San Antonio, he was presented with the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award. The early years of Dr. Abdelmawgoud’s career were marked by commendation, including the Excellence in Engineering and Technology Award from Southwest Research Institute in 2017, the Best Paper Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers World Automation Congress in 2018, and the 40 Under 40 Award from the Arizona Daily Star in 2021. During his time at RTX, he has received the Spot Award for Innovation twice, as well as the Spot Award for Collaboration and the CORE Apprentice Award.

In addition to his professional life, Dr. Abdelmawgoud is a dedicated husband and a loving father to twin children, a son and a daughter, both 10 years old. When he’s not working, he finds balance through playing basketball, hiking and cooking. Though he has already made significant contributions to his field, Dr. Abdelmawgoud looks forward to creating even greater impact, especially in his work on hypersonic technology. He views this sector as a crucial growth area for national defense and expects to continue playing a key role within it.
