Erkinjon G. Nazarov, PhD, Co-Owner at MicroPlasma Systems LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements and leadership in Mathematics and Education.

Dr. Nazarov is a pioneer in Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometry (DMS) and was involved in the initiation, realization and development DMS technology from 1981 to 1996 when he started professional activity at the Uzbek Academy of Sciences in the former Soviet Union. He dedicated himself to mentoring students and conducting research that bridged theoretical mathematics with practical applications in science and engineering. Dr. Nazarov was also instrumental in prototype development and analytical characterization efforts of a novel Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometer (DMS) and a new prototype of conventional time-of-flight Ion Mobility Spectrometers (IMS). Earlier in his career, from 1982 to 1996, he supervised the environmental analysis laboratory and worked as a scientific researcher at the Arifov Institute of Electronics within the Uzbek Academy of Sciences in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Between 1996 and 2002, Dr. Nazarov was an associate professor of chemistry and a senior research scientist at New Mexico State University. He has established a distinguished career as a mathematician and professor, making significant contributions to both academia and the scientific community. From 2002 to 2010, Dr. Nazarov served as the chief scientist researcher and development manager at Sionex Corporation in Boston, Massachusetts.

From 2010, Dr. Nazarov started work at the Draper Laboratory Bioengineering Center at the University of South Florida in the Tampa area as a senior scientist and principal member of the technical staff. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in advancing analytical techniques, particularly in DMS technology. During this period, he led several groundbreaking projects. His leadership facilitated significant progress in research initiatives and fostered a culture of teamwork and innovation.

In 2015, Dr. Nazarov retired and since 2018, he has served as a co-owner of MicroPlasma Systems LLC in Tampa, Florida, where he applies his expertise to advance the science of chemical traces detection and identification through his research and innovations. Through his company, Dr. Nazarov specializes in developing micro-plasma-based ion sources used for chemical trace detection in advanced ion mobility (DMS and IMS) type analytical instruments.

Dr. Nazarov’s academic background is equally impressive. His journey began with a master’s degree in physics and electrical engineering from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in Russia in 1973. He also earned a Doctor of Philosophy in surface ionization of organic molecules from Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute in 1981 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical and mathematical sciences (Doctor Habil) from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in Russia in 1992.

Throughout his professional journey, Dr. Nazarov has become a prolific author, now having published more than 130 scientific papers and contributed three chapters to academic books, one book, sharing insights that have influenced peers worldwide. He has also been awarded 55 U.S. patents, reflecting his contributions to scientific innovation. Among Dr. Nazarov’s many other accomplishments are advancements in ion mobility spectrometry that have garnered international recognition, including an award “For Distinguished Contribution in IMS Technology” from The International Society for Ion Mobility Spectrometry in Memphis, Tennessee in 2022.

Dr. Nazarov’s integration into the American professional community stands as one of his most notable achievements, marked by the formation of meaningful professional relationships and recognition for his innovative work. Over the past few decades, he has built connections in his field and formed many friendships, beginning with Professor Gary Eisman, a prominent figure in ion mobility spectrometry, who invited him to the United States in 1996 and still collaborated with him. Dr. Nazarov has also been recognized with several accolades, including an International Science Emergency Grant Program Award for Supporting Soviet Union Scientists in 1993, an Al-Biruni Award from the Internal Uzbek Committee of Sciences in 1996, and a Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Biological Institute in 1999.

Dr. Nazarov attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of his family, including his wife, who works at a local university. Looking ahead, he is committed to devoting more time to his family while continuing to share his expertise with colleagues in MicroPlasma research, fostering collaboration and advancing the field.
