Syrus Avanesyan, DSA Construction Project Inspector at the Los Angeles Unified School District and Owner at SA Inspection Services, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Construction Administration and Safety Inspection.
Mr. Avanesyan has established a distinguished career in construction project inspection and structural engineering, marked by more than 25 years of expertise in the Division of the State Architect inspections and related governmental projects. Since 2018, Mr. Avanesyan has held the position of DSA construction project inspector with the inspection department at the Los Angeles Unified School District. In this role, he has contributed to one of the largest school districts in the United States by upholding high standards in school construction and renovation projects across Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Mr. Avanesyan’s responsibilities include ensuring compliance with state regulations and safeguarding students’ well-being through meticulous oversight.
In 2023, Mr. Avanesyan also formed SA Inspection Services, Inc., where he leverages his extensive background to oversee complex construction initiatives. As the owner, he maintains comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, applies architectural and structural expertise and inspects projects from inception through completion. Mr. Avanesyan is also responsible for reviewing Division of the State Architect-approved plans, evaluating special plans that require compliance with restricted codes, and ensuring that all construction meets rigorous safety standards.
From 2015 to 2018, Mr. Avanesyan was a project engineer at APSI Construction Management Inc., where he managed engineering aspects of large-scale projects and coordinated with multidisciplinary teams to deliver successful outcomes. Between 2013 and 2015, he served as a DSA project inspector and inspector of record at CTE Inc.
Mr. Avanesyan’s earlier tenure as a DSA project inspector and inspector of record at TYR Inc. from 2009 to 2013 also helped solidify his reputation for technical precision and regulatory expertise. Before that, he spent over five years as a field engineer and state construction structural inspector for Ka2d Construction Management Inc. and DMJM H&N, where he was instrumental in inspecting state correctional facilities and other public infrastructure between 2002 and 2008. Among several other notable professional opportunities, Mr. Avanesyan held various roles at Graphland, Terracom Development LLC and Caleena Construction Corporation.
After immigrating to the United States in 1979, Mr. Avanesyan quickly leveraged his international experience by improving his English proficiency at the Iranian-American Association before advancing his education in Armenia. Upon arrival stateside, he secured a position with Kellogg Brown & Root Pty Ltd. within two weeks, launching a career that would span nuclear energy facilities, refineries and major public works projects. Mr. Avanesyan began his career in 1973 at C&I Engineering in his home country of Armenia.
Mr. Avanesyan’s academic achievements have been integral to his success. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in structural engineering at the Institute of Polytechnic, now the National Polytechnic University of Armenia, in Yerevan. He also acquired a master’s degree in structural engineering from California State University, Los Angeles.
In addition to his formal education, Mr. Avanesyan’s commitment to professional development is reflected in numerous designations. He holds a general contractor license from the Contractors State License Board, State of California, a credentialed building inspector UBC from the International Code Council, a Division of the State Architect Class II project inspector designation, and, among others, a certified school inspector credential from the American Construction Inspectors Association.
Mr. Avanesyan’s professional affiliations include membership in the American Construction Inspectors Association, the International Code Council, the Masonry Institute of America and the Division of the State Architect. In addition to his professional pursuits, he is civically engaged as a supporter of the American Disabled Veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Throughout his career, Mr. Avanesyan has demonstrated an unwavering passion for his field. He is recognized for his honesty, transparency and refusal to take shortcuts, qualities that have earned him respect among colleagues and clients alike. His approach is characterized by straightforwardness and a willingness to seek guidance when necessary. In recognition of his contributions, Mr. Avanesyan has received honors, including the Diamond Certificate for five years of service at Kellogg Brown & Root Pty Ltd., now KBR Inc., where he was named one of the best employees.
Looking ahead, Mr. Avanesyan intends to continue advancing his professional work while completing current assignments, including a modernization project at Kennedy High School that holds particular significance for him, and embarking on an upcoming complex project involving both high school and middle school components. Mr. Avanesyan remains dedicated to mentoring inspectors entering the field, reflecting his ongoing commitment to excellence in the industry.
