Pieter Wybro, retired principal owner at Worley, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in ocean engineering.
With 31 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Wybro excelled as principal owner of Worley for many years before retiring in 2009. He established himself at Getty Oil Company from 1978 to 1984. He found additional success as an author and educator.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Wybro pursued an education at the University of Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, graduating with a master’s degree in ocean engineering, followed by a PhD in ocean engineering in 1977.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Wybro has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He contributed to the Energy Education Foundation. He found success as co-author of “Adventures of Sailboat Marco Polo: How One Couple Prepared for and Lived Their Cruising Dream” in 2020. He has written many tsunami protection codes in Hawaii, conducted extensive research, and published numerous papers on ocean-going ships and their movements.
Mr. Wybro considers his involvement with the Marco Polo Platform, which was awarded the Project of the Year at the Offshore Technology Conference, as his most significant career accomplishment. He also installed the Joliet Tension Leg Platform (TLP) for Conoco, Inc., which was the deepest platform in the world at the time. He has worked on platforms in Indonesia, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean, the west coast of Africa, the North Sea, and many other locations. Since retiring, he has consulted intermittently and is enjoying his time sailing and cruising with his wife.
