Hakob G. Avetisyan, PhD, owner of Estimate and Build and associate professor at California State University, Fullerton, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.
With a decade of experience to his credit, Dr. Avetisyan has carved out a distinguished career in construction, engineering, project management, environmental policy analysis, and transportation and energy sector analysis. Currently excelling as the owner of Estimate and Build since 2023, he leverages his extensive expertise to lead the development of innovative techniques and solutions for project management and provide top-tier construction and engineering services. In this role, he combines his practical experience with management science to ensure the success of each project.
In addition to this position, Dr. Avetisyan has held an impressive tenure at California State University, Fullerton, where he has served as an associate professor since 2019. From 2019 to 2023, he was the program coordinator for engineering management. Additionally, he was an assistant professor at the same institution from 2013 to 2019. His academic career also includes teaching positions at the Irvine Institute of Technology from 2016 to 2018 and at the University of Maryland from 2011 to 2013.
In his current academic role, Dr. Avetisyan focuses on research, publishing papers, applying for grants, and mentoring students outside the classroom. He serves as a faculty advisor for three student chapters, guiding them to progress in the industry and become valuable assets. Additionally, he is actively involved in numerous university committees, including chairing the Extension and International Programs Committee.
Dr. Avetisyan’s career began in academia and industry. He worked as a research assistant and teaching assistant at the University of Maryland from 2009 to 2013 and at Ohio University from 2005 to 2008. He gained industry experience as an engineer at Chilingarian Design and Construction Company from 2003 to 2005, a circuit assembler at Concern-Energia CJSC from 2000 to 2004, and a foreman and designer at Vahagn and Samvel Co. Ltd in 2002.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Avetisyan pursued an education at Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction, where he earned a Master of Engineering in civil engineering in 2003 and a PhD in civil engineering in 2006. He continued his academic efforts at Ohio University, obtaining a Master of Science in construction engineering and a Master of Science in environmental studies in 2008. He concluded his studies with a PhD in the Project Management Program offered through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland in 2013.
In addition, Dr. Avetisyan has contributed as an author and co-author for several significant works, including “Carbon Cost Allocation on Consumers and Suppliers in the Global Natural Gas Supply Chain,” “On-Road Traffic Emissions Estimation Models,” “Strategic Investment Decision-Support Model,” and “Construction Equipment Costs and Emissions Minimization Tool.” Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has volunteered for various charities and school competitions in Reno, Nevada, where construction students competed on real projects organized by the Associated Schools of Construction. He also serves as a competition judge for the Associated Builders and Contractors. Additionally, he is a member of the Construction Management Association of America and the Design-Build Institute of America.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Avetisyan has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was recognized with the Best Paper Award by the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management in 2013, and the Midwest Coal Ash Association Award at the World of Coal Ash by the American Coal Ash Association in 2009. Additionally, he received a Service Award from California State University Fullerton and the Best Teaching Assistant award during his academic career.
Dr. Avetisyan’s most notable achievement is receiving best paper awards while still a student. The first award was for a modeling system he built for the cement industry. The second award, presented by the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, recognized his paper as the best out of 8,000 submissions that year.
Dr. Avetisyan attributes his success to the unwavering support of his family, especially his parents and wife. He also acknowledges the significant impact of his professors and mentors, who were instrumental in his growth by pushing him to his limits. He believes in the importance of perseverance, a willingness to keep learning, and continually pushing himself to the edge to become stronger.
Looking ahead, Dr. Avetisyan is focused on growing his business and ensuring it reaches new heights in the industry. Concurrently, he is actively involved in offering new courses, expanding research areas, and networking with industry professionals and companies, and he envisions initiating a construction management program.
In advising aspiring professionals, Dr. Avetisyan emphasizes the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and pushing beyond one’s limits. He believes real growth happens outside the comfort zone and encourages individuals to embrace challenges and strive for excellence.
