Patricia Andrea Davis-Lemessy, PhD, engineering fellow at Cordis Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biomedical engineering.
With nearly three and a half decades of experience, she has established a successful career as an engineer specializing in biomedical engineering. She currently excels as an Engineering Fellow at Cordis, a position she has held since 2017, where she serves as the subject matter expert for materials used in their products, writes to regulatory agencies about the technical aspects of those products, and seeks new materials to replace potentially discontinued ones. Additionally, she has been the senior principal engineer at the same company since 2015. Her experience also includes roles as engineer at W. L. Gore & Associates from 2014 to 2015, principal manufacturing engineer at Creganna-Tactx Medical from 2012 to 2014, principal engineer at Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson Co. from 2000 to 2012, senior research engineer II at Merit Medical Systems from 1999 to 2000, research and development manager at Biocompatibles Cardiovascular from 1997 to 1998, senior research engineer II at Guidant Corporation from 1995 to 1997, senior research engineer I at Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (ACS) from 1993 to 1998, and research associate at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Health System from 1990 to 1992.
Dr. Davis-Lemessy has contributed significantly through written works, authoring “Positive Affirmation for the Black Child” and “A Woman of Color,” as well as publishing over 100 journal articles and several children’s books. Additionally, she holds four U.S. patents and is a past member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Her impressive achievements have earned her admission into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame in 2024, the Innovation Award from Cordis, the E. Stuart Eichert, Jr. Student Award for Selfless Service, and the Ivy League Champion in Track and Field Award from the University of Pennsylvania. Laying a solid educational foundation for her successes, she earned a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering with a minor in materials science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, followed by a Master of Science and a PhD in polymer science and engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1990.
Reflecting on her path, Dr. Davis-Lemessy initially aspired to become a doctor but was concerned about the demanding lifestyle often involving sleepless nights and long hours in the hospital. However, upon entering undergraduate studies, she discovered biomedical engineering, which excited her as an opportunity to apply engineering principles to the human body. She takes great pride in assisting with the design of products that have been well-received by the industry and attributes her success to her passion for her work. In the coming years, she plans to do some consulting, travel more, and mentor the next generation upon retirement. Her advice to others is to not take sexism personally but to use it as fuel to excel in the field. In her personal life, she enjoys planting, running marathons, traveling, writing, self-publishing on Amazon, and taking care of her home.
