Richard J. Long, PE, founder of Long International Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in project management.
With nearly three decades of experience, Mr. Long has built a successful career in engineering and project management, specializing in construction management, costs and damages, loss of labor productivity, cumulative impact claims, schedule delays, project management standard of care, insurance delay claims, project management performance, risk analysis, and schedule quality assurance reviews. He has served as the founder of Long International since 1996, where his responsibilities include managing the firm’s major project assignments, overseeing all aspects of project consulting work, preparing expert reports, and conducting peer reviews of reports prepared by others before delivery to clients. He also assembles the right team of experts and support staff for each project and provides claims prevention training to clients. His experience also includes serving as senior vice president at Hill International from 1993 to 1995 and vice president, director of operations, and principal in charge of dispute services at Kellogg Corporation from 1983 to 1993. Earlier in his career, he worked as senior project manager at Tosco Corporation from 1974 to 1983, with Fluor E&C in 1972 and 1973, and as a process engineer at Conoco from 1970 to 1972. Additionally, he is the author of two textbooks and over 100 articles published in various professional publications.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Long laid a solid educational foundation by earning a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970, followed by a Master of Science in chemical and petroleum refining engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1974. He is a registered professional engineer in Colorado and a licensed professional engineer in Newfoundland and Labrador. His professional affiliations include memberships with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Project Management Institute, AACE International, and the Society of Construction Law.
Mr. Long takes great pride in being selected by an international arbitration tribunal as a tribunal-appointed expert. This prestigious role involved aiding the arbitration panel in understanding complex issues related to schedule delays, cost overruns, and project management problems on a large oil refinery project in Europe. He attributes his success as an engineer to his meticulous and accurate work, in which he ensures that his methodology, analyses, and support for his opinions adhere to industry standards, helping him provide clear, credible, and reliable testimony in his field.
In the coming years, Mr. Long is fully committed to mentoring and supporting individuals within Long International who aspire to build successful careers in construction claims and project management consulting. His primary objective is to provide his team with the necessary training, guidance, and mentorship to handle the technical analyses and expert report writing involved in engineering and construction claims consulting. He also aims to empower them to become confident in their professional opinions. He has no immediate plans to step away from his career, finds immense satisfaction in his work, and deeply values the relationships he has cultivated with both colleagues and clients.
