Shamim M. Rashid-Sumar, PE, FSFPE, senior vice president of codes and standards at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in management.
With nearly two and a half decades of experience, Ms. Rashid-Sumar has built a successful career in management, specializing in fire codes and standards and fire protection engineering. She currently serves as senior vice president of codes and standards at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, a position he has held since 2022. In this role, she influences codes and standards to support concrete, collaborates with other industries to ensure codes are updated, safer, and more resilient, meets with various code organizations, and delivers presentations. Her professional experience includes serving as vice president of fire codes and standards at the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association from 2019 to 2022. She has also held leadership roles with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, including secretary and treasurer since 2024, board member from 2020 to 2023, and board of governors for the SFPE Foundation since 2021. She also worked with Jensen Hughes and its predecessor organizations in various leadership capacities across the Middle East, including practice leader and director of business development in 2019, growth director and vice president of development from 2017 to 2018, and director of business development from 2016 to 2017.
Ms. Rashid-Sumar was also the director of business development for the Middle East with Aon Fire Protection Engineering from 2014 to 2016, served as vice president of Middle East operations for Rolf Jensen & Associates from 2011 to 2014, and held multiple leadership roles in the UAE offices from 2007 to 2011. Her career began as a consultant in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. offices of Rolf Jensen & Associates from 2001 to 2007. Her early experience includes working as a summer intern with the United States Naval Research Laboratory in 1999 and as a science and engineering apprentice with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory from 1995 to 1998. Laying a strong educational foundation, she earned a Bachelor of Science in fire protection engineering with a minor in French language from the University of Maryland in 2000. She is a licensed professional engineer through the Delaware Association of Professional Engineers, certified since 2005. Additionally, she holds a certification in France for engineers from the EPF School of Engineering in 2001 and is an NFPA 101 international instructor with the National Fire Protection Association.
Ms. Rashid-Sumar actively contributes to the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. She is a principal member of the National Fire Protection Association, and a member of the International Code Council, ASTM International, and the American Concrete Institute. She served as president of the United Arab Emirates Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and as chief of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America and the Salamander Fire Protection Honor Society, and has served on the board for diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging at a local school, supporting the Concrete Advancement Foundation, and volunteering for food drives. Reflecting on her path, she was honored in 2019 with the grade of Fellow by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, a significant recognition for her years of dedication to the profession. In light of her impressive undertakings, she was named one of Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s 40 Under 40 in 2016 and was a Banneker Key Scholar at the University of Maryland in 1996. She attributes her success to the strong foundation provided by her parents and her husband’s support. Looking to the future, she aspires to grow as a leader, fine-tune her work in the field, and advance to the next level in her career.
