Title: Senior Engineer
Company: Amgen Inc.
Location: Thousand Oaks, California, United States
Li-Ching Lee, senior engineer at Amgen Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pharmaceuticals.
Ms. Lee’s work as a senior engineer involves diverse responsibilities across the biopharmaceutical field. At Amgen Inc., she focuses on equipment development, designing and optimizing systems for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Her role addresses critical industry challenges, such as improving harvest processes where centrifuge systems often underperform or lack advanced control systems. This issue inspired her to pivot toward equipment innovation to enhance manufacturing efficiency and reduce product loss. In her prior role as a senior research associate at Sorrento Therapeutics, she contributed to various aspects of manufacturing, including upstream processing and harvest. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she played a role in developing platforms for vaccine production. Her expertise extends to mammalian cell culture, a cornerstone of biomanufacturing, which has supported the creation of drugs for a range of needs, including weight loss treatments and bone health. Driven by her passion for advancing biopharmaceutical processes, she remains committed to making impactful contributions to the field.
Originally from Taiwan, Ms. Lee began her education at the National Pintung University of Education, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical biology and a Master of Science in applied chemistry. After graduating, she became a senior process engineer for the skin care industry in Taiwan, but she sought to make a greater impact by curing diseases and improving a patient’s quality of life. To progress down this avenue, she immigrated to the U.S. to attend the Keck Graduate Institute, graduating with a Master of Science in biopharmaceutical processing in 2019. Reflecting on her career since, she is proud to have developed the COVID-19 vaccine process at Sorrento Therapeutics, handling all the process parameters and manufacturing alone. This process involved numerous calculations and techniques, and she remains proud of her accomplishment. At Amgen, she is proud to be part of the team that is developing a cutting-edge single-use centrifugation system, an equipment that represents a breakthrough in the centrifugation biopharma industry. Her team is the first to successfully develop a single-use centrifuge, paving the way for the world’s first centrifugation launch.
In the coming years, Ms. Lee intends to remain active in the biopharmaceutical industry. She plans to mentor and train young professionals working in manufacturing and other areas, aiming to share her knowledge, expertise and techniques to contribute to the industry’s growth. Beyond mentorship, she hopes to transition to early-stage drug development and to eventually rise to a director role to increase her contributions to the industry and scientific discovery.
