Dr. Chandrasekaran is lauded for his tenure in engineering and project leadership. Since 2023, he has been a chemical engineer associate at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, Tennessee. Tasked with supporting the organizational platform related to scale-up and process development, he also focuses on helping the company achieve its goals.
Employed by the organization since 2022, Dr. Chandrasekaran initially served as a principal research chemical engineer for process scale-up and innovation, where he managed front-end loading evaluation and provided strategic guidance to the organization.
Before joining Eastman Chemical Company, Dr. Chandrasekaran was affiliated with the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign as a postdoctoral fellow in 2013, visiting research and development engineer from 2014 to 2015, and lead research engineer between 2015 and 2022. His time at the institution paved the way for his future success in the industry.
Dr. Chandrasekaran became highly educated, receiving a Bachelor of Technology in chemical engineering from Anna University in Chennai, India, in 2009. He then earned a Master of Science in civil and environmental engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental science and engineering from Clarkson University in 2011 and 2013, respectively. During his studies, he garnered experience as a research assistant at Clarkson University from 2009 to 2013. Besides his degrees, Dr. Chandrasekaran is a trained musician and a certified meditation trainer through the International Association for Human Values.
As part of his professional commitments, Dr. Chandrasekaran is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Sigma Xi Society. As a seasoned researcher, he has authored over 20 scholarly articles and several technical reports in professional publications like the Journal of Elastomers and Plastics, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, and Energy & Fuels. He has also contributed two book chapters.
Among Dr. Chandrasekaran’s numerous projects, one involved developing a fly ash/biochar substitute for carbon black applications. He also completed one on the thermochemical conversion of plastics and biomass, an e-waste project, and a biomass screening methods project to improve process efficiency. These project deliveries have served as a testament to his hard work and dedication to improving processes for global sustainability. Dr. Chandrasekaran notes the importance of avoiding bias and continually challenging opinions in his field, whether for a simple research approach or during the development of a complex process. Apart from his work-related ventures, Dr. Chandrasekaran has served as both a volunteer and mentor for children in his native country of India.
Dr. Chandrasekaran received a VICAL Award from the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. His success can be attributed to the tremendous support of his family, which helped him achieve his goals. He also credits several significant mentors and colleagues who have played a critical role in his development. Most notably, Dr. Chandrasekaran is grateful to one of his doctoral and master’s advisors for guiding him throughout his career long after college.
In preparation for his future, Dr. Chandrasekaran intends to continue to grow in his profession by obtaining leadership positions where he can continue contributing to the growth of Eastman Chemical Company.
