Howard E. Lambert, PhD, owner of FTA Associates, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.

Dr. Lambert is lauded for his expertise in engineering, serving as the owner of FTA Associates since 1980. Based in California, he is an expert in system safety analysis, fault tree analysis (FTA), reliability analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, and safeguards and security analysis, bringing with him over 50 years of relevant experience. As such, Dr. Lambert conducts safety studies using FTA and other relevant work.

Before establishing FTA Associates, Dr. Lambert worked as a staff member for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Located in Livermore, California, the federally funded research and development center, primarily financed by the U.S. Department of Energy, ensures the nation’s nuclear weapons safety, security and reliability via advanced science, engineering and technology. Dr. Lambert has also garnered expertise teaching at various institutions throughout his career, including his alma mater, the University of California Berkeley, where he taught courses on probabilistic risk assessment, system safety and FTA.

Becoming highly educated in his field, Dr. Lambert received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a Bachelor of Engineering in chemical engineering at Youngstown State University. Subsequently, he received a Master of Engineering in nuclear engineering from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering at the University of California Berkeley. Additionally, he holds a professional engineering license in California in safety and nuclear engineering.

Dr. Lambert has been highly active in several industry-related organizations, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Nuclear Society, the American Society of Safety Professionals, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is also an elected fellow of the Safety and Reliability Society.

Apart from his work-related endeavors. Dr. Lambert enjoys being active in his community through various initiatives. He is also a member of the Nazarene Church.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Lambert spent over five years on an FTA study of the Defense Waste Processing Facility at the Savannah River Site, focused on fire and explosion hazards. He also authored “IMPORTANCE,” a fault tree computer code that has since been utilized by various organizations worldwide to conduct major process hazard reviews. Furthermore, Dr. Lambert has published several technical articles on system safety, reliability and security analysis, including “Introduction to Fault Tree Analysis” with co-author Richard Barlow. All his published works can notably be found on his website. Besides his research and writing contributions, Dr. Lambert has presented before groups. His most recent presentation was hosted at the LLNL in 2019 on FTA.

In light of his hard work and tenacity, Dr. Lambert has received several notable accolades, including the Paul C. Luginbill Chemical Engineering Award from Youngstown State University. He also received two Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship Awards from the University of Florida and the University of California Berkeley.

Grateful for his many accomplishments, Dr. Lambert notes the many remarkable professionals he has worked alongside in the industry, which has provided him with many learning experiences. He also attributes much of his success to several former LLNL colleagues and other experts he has worked with throughout his career. Collaborating with other like-minded individuals has been the most critical aspect of Dr. Lambert’s profession.
