Mr. Cottrill has been a principal structural engineer at Pickering Associates in Parkersburg, West Virginia, since 2024, where he leads design efforts for various structural facilities, such as buildings, schools and hospitals. He also mentors young structural engineers to ensure their designs are suitable for contractors to construct safely. Initially hired by the architecture and planning company in 2018 as a structural engineer, he has continually progressed, earning respect and expertise as a leading authority at his firm. Earlier, Mr. Cottrill garnered success as a staff engineer at MR Structures in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, from 2016 to 2018.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Cottrill received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at West Virginia University in 2016. While pursuing his degree, he completed a structural engineering internship at his current employer, Pickering Associates, in 2015. During that time, he received tremendous mentorship from a gentleman who became his boss when he was first hired in 2016. Mr. Cottrill also holds credentials as a professional engineer through the Ohio Professional Engineering Board and the West Virginia Board of Professional Engineers. Furthermore, he completed 10 hours of Occupational Safety and Health Administration training and is a certified Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 remote drone pilot.
Beyond his work-related initiatives, Mr. Cottrill has engaged with various nonprofit initiatives, including as a former event-fundraising coordinator with the American Society of Civil Engineers and through participation with Engineers Without Borders. He has also been involved with a local canned food drive and through charity design work with Pickering Associates. Throughout his career, Mr. Cottrill’s most notable achievement was his contribution to Generation West Virginia, a program designed for young entrepreneurs and individuals who seek to retain young employees in the state. He was notably recognized as the Emerging Leader of West Virginia through this program. As a structural designer, Mr. Cottrill has grown to become widely recognized for his expertise in designing safe, code-compliant and cost-effective structures while abiding by professional engineering practices that are both meaningful and provide new structures for future generations to enjoy. Eager for the future, he intends to expand Pickering Associates’ structural engineering division and move into a director or manager position.
