Mr. Roopchand, a leader in the engineering sector, currently serves as an offshore health, safety and environmental (HSE) specialist at InCrEdible Safety Services Limited, associated with BHP in Trinidad and Tobago, since 2021. In this capacity, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to HSE standards within the offshore sector. Mr. Roopchand’s leadership was particularly evident during his involvement in one of the world’s largest gas fields in Saudi Arabia, where he led a team of eight professionals. Under his guidance, the team achieved an impressive milestone of 2.5 million man-hours without a Lost Time Incident, marking a significant accomplishment in the region’s energy industry.
In 2018, Mr. Roopchand briefly served as an offshore safety training coordinator for JSL International LLC. He also excelled during this time as an offshore rigsite HSE adviser at Qatar Petroleum, now QatarEnergy, from 2014 to 2021. During this tenure, Mr. Roopchand was responsible for implementing rigorous safety protocols and ensuring compliance with international standards across complex offshore operations, in line with client, government and company regulations and key performance indicators.
Among other roles, Mr. Roopchand served as an offshore drilling HSE officer at Repsol, headquartered in Spain, between 2013 and 2014. He was recruited from Carillion, where he worked as a health, safety, environmental and quality adviser from 2012 to 2014. This role followed working for Petrotrin, now Trinidad and Tobago Petroleum Holdings Ltd., as a health, safety, security and environment manager and operations lead between 2009 and 2012, during which he supported the company’s mission of exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons, as well as the manufacturing and marketing of petroleum products.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Roopchand contributed to Kenson Operational Services Ltd. for BG Group, now Shell plc, Starting in 2002, he spent several years as a production operations technician, supporting operational excellence through adherence to best practices in safety management. Mr. Roopchand also served as a guest lecturer on ethics in engineering at The University of Trinidad and Tobago in 2018, reflecting his dedication to advancing professional standards within the academic community.
Mr. Roopchand’s educational background has been instrumental in shaping his career trajectory. He obtained an associate degree in petroleum engineering from The University of Trinidad and Tobago in 2008, followed by a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, health and environment from the University of Greenwich in 2012, and a master’s degree in safety, risk and reliability engineering from Heriot-Watt University in 2020. Additionally, Mr. Roopchand has been a Level II coating inspector certified by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, now AMPP, since 2013. Further enhancing his qualifications, he has held a certificate in compliance systems from Cornell University since 2023 and a second certificate in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning from The University of Texas at Austin since 2024.
Beyond his education, Mr. Roopchand’s professional affiliations include membership with the American Society for Quality, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, the Project Management Institute, Inc., and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management. These memberships have been instrumental in his ability to remain at the forefront of his industry.
Mr. Roopchand attributes his achievements to working alongside leading firms and highly educated colleagues throughout his career journey. He also acknowledges the sacrifices his parents made, which enabled him to pursue opportunities that have defined his professional path. Looking ahead, Mr. Roopchand aspires to secure employment within the AI and data sector either domestically or internationally. He also aims to contribute scholarly materials to advance knowledge within his field.
