Mr. Veerapaneni, a leader in the energy sector, has been a senior consultant at 5 Lakes Energy, a gas industry consultant based in Canton, Michigan, since 2019. In this capacity, he leverages his extensive expertise in expenditures and maintaining pipeline systems to advise on energy policy and infrastructure projects. Mr. Veerapaneni is most proud of ensuring that the state’s pipeline systems operate safely and that funds are used effectively to maintain reliable and secure gas service. His commitment to safety and fiscal responsibility has been instrumental in supporting Michigan’s energy reliability.
Before joining 5 Lakes Energy, Mr. Veerapaneni was employed by DTE Energy in Detroit. Hired as a principal engineer of enterprise business systems on the DTE2 audit team in 2004, he was involved in developing and implementing appropriate audit controls for all business processes. After several years in that capacity, Mr. Veerapaneni transitioned into the role of principal engineer from 2007 to 2019. During this period, he contributed significantly to transmission engineering, where he was involved in IMP activities in maintaining high-pressure piping systems.
Mr. Veerapaneni garnered success in dual roles as an interim manager and principal engineer for codes and standards at MichCon, now part of DTE Energy, in Detroit, from 1998 to 2004. He also served as the director of international project operations at MCN Investment Corporation, MCN Energy, MichCon, in Detroit between 1995 and 1998. Earlier in his career, Mr. Veerapaneni served as a gas safety program manager for the Michigan Public Service Commission in Lansing from 1974 to 1995. In this capacity, he oversaw statewide gas safety programs, including the Michigan Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Program, and regulatory enforcement for over 20 years.
Mr. Veerapaneni’s professional journey also included a short tenure as a mechanical systems engineer at Novatronics Inc. in Pompano Beach, Florida, from 1973 to 1974, where he worked on advanced mechanical systems design. Before that, he was a mechanical technician at Medical Data Systems Corporation in Detroit between 1972 and 1973.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Veerapaneni received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Andhra University in India in 1969 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1971. During his studies, he served as a graduate engineer at The Singareni Collieries Company Limited in Andhra Pradesh, India, from 1969 to 1970. Mr. Veerapaneni holds professional engineering credentials through the licensing and regulatory affairs division of the state of Michigan.
In addition to his education, Mr. Veerapaneni is an active member of several industry-related organizations, including The Association for Materials Protection and Performance, formerly NACE, and The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is also a member of the gas piping technology committee of the American Gas Association. Beyond his professional pursuits, Mr. Veerapaneni is involved with Kiwanis International, reflecting his commitment to civic engagement and community service.
Throughout his career, Mr. Veerapaneni has demonstrated a high level of expertise in expenditure management and pipeline system maintenance. He has also become recognized for his ability to ensure operational safety while optimizing resource allocation. In recognition of his long-standing contributions, Mr. Veerapaneni received a 30-Year Service Recognition from the gas piping technology committee of the American Gas Association.
