Title: Senior Electrical Engineer
Company:
Modesto Irrigation District
Location:
Modesto, California, United States

Charles M. Asaah, Senior Electrical Engineer at Modesto Irrigation District, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Distribution System Planning.

Leveraging nearly two decades of experience in the electric power industry and a distinguished background in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Asaah has established himself as an expert in distribution system planning. Since 2023, he has served as a senior electrical engineer at Modesto Irrigation District, where he leads a team responsible for planning the electrification process, conducting future-focused studies and simulations, and ensuring that the distribution system can accommodate evolving demands from residential and industrial developments. His work includes project development, budgeting, periodic maintenance and upgrades, data collection from the field, and comprehensive assessments of system integrity for transmission and protection. Mr. Asaah’s expertise extends to analyzing voltage phenomena and system disturbances, such as power factors and harmonics, and implementing preemptive solutions to ensure reliability and power quality.

One of his most significant professional accomplishments occurred during his tenure at Modesto Irrigation District. In the past few years, he successfully planned the integration of new subdivisions into existing systems by modeling and studying processes that improved reliability while reducing costs. As the main point of contact for electric transmission system development involving load and planning, Mr. Asaah reviews and approves systems for regulatory compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission standards. In cases where exceptions are necessary, he provides clear justifications for deviations. Mr. Asaah’s greatest achievement at the district was developing a benchmark for planning where none existed before. He created a prototype that now serves as a reference point for evaluating performance, an initiative that continues to guide operational excellence.

Before joining Modesto Irrigation District, Mr. Asaah spent nearly a decade as an associate electrical engineer at Turlock Irrigation District from 2014 to 2023. In this role, he contributed to electric power reliability efforts and regulatory compliance within the region’s utility sector. Mr. Asaah’s earlier career included positions at dB Control in Fremont, California, initially as a test engineer in 2010 and then as a quality engineer between 2012 and 2014.

Mr. Asaah’s professional journey began with over a decade of honorable service in the U.S. Navy following his arrival in the United States from Cameroon in 1996. He enlisted in September 1998 and initially served in maintenance and reliability roles from 1999 to 2002 before advancing to work center supervisor for electrical power generation and distribution until 2004. As an instructor and facility manager between 2004 and 2008, he trained personnel on advanced technical systems before becoming a gas turbine systems electrical engineer, petty officer first class, from 2008 to 2010. Throughout his military career, Mr. Asaah demonstrated exceptional leadership and technical proficiency.

A commitment to lifelong learning has defined Mr. Asaah’s academic path. After completing community college coursework while serving in Rhode Island, he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering with concentrations in electronics and industrial control systems from the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, in 2007. His undergraduate capstone project on advanced home automation anticipated many features found in modern smart homes today. Building on this foundation, Mr. Asaah pursued graduate studies at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, receiving a graduate certificate in renewable energy in 2012 and a Master of Science in electrical engineering with a specialization in power electronics and power systems in 2014. His master’s research focused on high-powered grid inverters for solar energy applications. In addition to his degrees, Mr. Asaah is a licensed professional engineer, a testament to his technical mastery.

Mr. Asaah’s civic engagement is reflected through his ongoing involvement with BRAID Africa Foundation as a board member since his mid-20s. The organization supports communities rebuilding after civil conflict by fostering resource sharing among returnees across West Africa. Drawing on his engineering background, Mr. Asaah also advised Santa Clara University undergraduates working on irrigation projects for local foundations, demonstrating his commitment to leveraging technical expertise for social good.

Mr. Asaah’s commitments to the military earned him recognition through multiple honors, including Good Conduct Medals in 2001, 2005 and 2008, Sailor of the Year Awards in 2009 and 2011, and U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps Achievement in 2010. Reflecting on his career, he credits much of his success to the steadfast support of family members throughout his educational journey, especially his wife. He also acknowledges encouragement from friends during challenging periods. Mr. Asaah continues to draw inspiration from his mother’s mentorship as well as guidance from his uncle, an emeritus professor of electrical engineering who introduced him to inspection practices during his formative years.

As an adviser to young students considering careers within engineering fields, Mr. Asaah encourages them to focus on foundational subjects like physics and mathematics while remaining open to practical problem-solving roles within electrical power generation. This discipline offers rewarding hands-on challenges often overlooked by those drawn solely to software or computer science. Looking ahead, Mr. Asaah plans to pursue doctoral studies in electrical engineering with aspirations toward academia as either an adjunct or full-time faculty member while also exploring opportunities as a consultant within the electric power sector.
