Morgan Dowell, Co-Founder and Principal Architect at Saga IT, LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Healthcare Information Technology.
Leveraging more than two decades of experience in the broader information technology sector, Mr. Dowell has distinguished himself as a leading expert in healthcare information technology and healthcare data standards, including HL7, FHIR and DICOM. Over the past 10 years, he has played a central role at Saga IT, LLC, where he has been involved in designing solutions, conducting client consultations, performing system architecture, overseeing team implementation, and managing sales and marketing efforts. Additionally, Mr. Dowell handles billing, invoicing and strategic planning, and he works directly with clients to ensure their needs are met.
Mr. Dowell’s tenure at Saga IT, LLC, is further defined by his leadership in developing innovative products that address critical needs in healthcare data sharing. Over the last two years, he and his team have focused on creating a platform designed to compete with Microsoft’s PowerShare, a major player in the healthcare data-sharing market following Microsoft’s acquisition of Nuance Communications for $19 billion in 2022. The new product from Saga IT, LLC, aims to provide a more accessible and affordable alternative for healthcare institutions burdened by high image transfer fees. In addition to this flagship project, Mr. Dowell’s portfolio includes Mirth Connect from NextGen Healthcare and the complementary open-source tool MirthSync, which has gained notable traction within the developer community.
What sets Mr. Dowell apart is his extensive domain knowledge acquired through working with hundreds of clients as a contractor or consultant. This breadth of experience has given him insights into a diverse range of products and methodologies across the healthcare industry. Among his most significant achievements was guiding a healthcare startup client from its inception, when it had no hospital integrations and was launching in the United States, to its eventual acquisition by Medtronic. Under Mr. Dowell’s strategic direction and with Saga IT’s technical expertise, the company expanded to serve more than 800 institutions nationwide.
Before founding Saga IT, LLC, in 2016, Mr. Dowell served as a software architect consultant for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 2013 to 2016. In this capacity, he contributed to projects that further honed his expertise in complex healthcare environments, including the maintenance and development of applications vital to the organization. Between 2011 and 2013, Mr. Dowell worked as a senior software engineer consultant for the Army Publishing Directorate in Arlington, Virginia, where he provided critical engineering support for the Wounded Warrior program that catered to over three million patients.
Earlier roles that have been instrumental to Mr. Dowell’s upward progression included serving as a senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. from 2009 to 2011, during which he worked on projects for various government agencies in the Washington area. He was also a software engineer at Live Elements Inc., contributing to innovative software solutions for commercial clients between 2007 and 2009. Mr. Dowell’s career began as an HL7 integration engineer at Medical Automation Systems, now RALS, in 2005. This experience laid the foundation for his later specialization in healthcare data standards.
Mr. Dowell’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 2005. The rigorous education he received provided the technical foundation necessary for his subsequent achievements in software engineering and system architecture within the healthcare sector.
Throughout his career, Mr. Dowell has demonstrated remarkable diligence and perfectionism, qualities that have shaped his approach to problem-solving and leadership. He describes himself as highly conscientious and articulate about his work methods, always striving to do things correctly and thoroughly. These personal attributes have been instrumental in building trust with clients and colleagues alike.
Mr. Dowell’s success is also attributed to his unique vantage point as a leader of a services company that has enabled him to observe countless products and solutions across different regions of the healthcare industry. This comprehensive exposure has prepared him to launch innovative products tailored to real-world challenges faced by healthcare providers.
A lifelong passion for computing inspired Mr. Dowell’s entry into information technology. Early interests in computer games and programming were nurtured by family influences, particularly his older cousin, whose father owned a computer store. Together, the two notably incorporated their experience with National Institutes of Health contracts into Saga IT, LLC, when they took over the family business.
Looking ahead, Mr. Dowell is dedicated to successfully launching OpenShare, a new product intended to make healthcare data sharing more affordable and accessible for community hospitals nationwide, while continuing Saga IT’s established services. By addressing prohibitive pricing models that currently limit access for many institutions, Mr. Dowell aims to make a lasting impact on how medical data is exchanged across the industry.
