Before his current role, Mr. Strunk was the chief structures engineer at Epic Aircraft LLC from 2012 to 2020. During this period, he played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s structural engineering capabilities, overseeing critical projects and mentoring engineering teams. Mr. Strunk’s efforts were instrumental in developing and certifying cutting-edge aircraft designs that have set new standards for performance and safety.

Between 2010 and 2012, Mr. Strunk served as a senior structures engineer at Erickson Air-Crane Inc., a company renowned for its modified Sikorsky helicopters used in heavy-lifting and firefighting operations. In this role, he applied his expertise in structural analysis and design to support the company’s specialized fleet, ensuring reliability and operational effectiveness in demanding environments.

Among other noteworthy roles, Mr. Strunk worked as a contract stress engineer at Spirit AeroSystems from 2008 to 2009. There, he gained valuable experience working on the Boeing 777 program and conducting damage tolerance analysis. This position allowed Mr. Strunk to further refine his skills in large-scale aerospace manufacturing and complex structural assessments.

Between 2002 and 2008, Mr. Strunk was a structural test director at Adam Aircraft. He contributed to the development of a new twin-engine, carbon-fiber airplane and built a team of 25 engineers and technicians dedicated to structural testing. Mr. Strunk began his career over a decade earlier at The Lancair Company, first as an intern in 1998, then as a senior structures engineer from 1998 to 2002. During his tenure, he worked on the development and certification of the first general aviation aircraft in three decades, a milestone achievement for both him and the organization.

Mr. Strunk earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering technology from the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls in 1998, followed by a Bachelor of Science in manufacturing engineering technology on campus in 1999. He also completed coursework in Hungarian studies at Szegedi Tudományegyetem in Hungary in 1996.

Mr. Strunk is an active member of several industry organizations, including serving as a composite technical community advisor for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers since 2001. He is also affiliated with SAE International and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Mr. Strunk’s dedication to advancing manufacturing technology is further reflected in his volunteer service on the SME board of directors and through his work as a speaker on aviation and composite structures for SME, sharing insights drawn from more than two decades at the forefront of aerospace engineering.

Beyond his professional work, Mr. Strunk’s civic engagement and education outreach have included serving as an assistant scoutmaster with Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), volunteering on industry outreach and career education initiatives at local high schools, and founding Central Oregon Manufacturing Networking to foster connections within the regional manufacturing community.

Throughout his career, Mr. Strunk has been recognized for his expertise in carbon fiber and composite structures. These fields have shaped much of his professional trajectory since his undergraduate senior project focused on them. This early academic endeavor ignited Mr. Strunk’s passion for composites and set the foundation for his subsequent accomplishments in aviation engineering.

Mr. Strunk’s achievements have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including SME’s Young Outstanding Manufacturing Engineer of the Year Award for Emerging Professionals in 2005, an Industry Engineer of the Year Award from the Pacific Northwest section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2022, and the Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from Oregon Institute of Technology in 2025. Attributing much of his success to a strong mentorship network that has guided him throughout his career, Mr. Strunk is eager to expand his reach and expertise in the rapidly evolving field of aviation technology.
