Peter Graham Johnson, Founder and Vice President of Engineering at Sifos Technologies Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Engineers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Engineering.
Mr. Johnson, founder and vice president of engineering at Sifos Technologies Inc., has been at the helm of his organization since 2004, where he is involved in managing all engineering aspects of the company’s daily business. From customer support and product development to technical documentation, patent work and sales support, he engages in all the intricacies of his small business. Based in Andover, Massachusetts, Sifos Technologies Inc. focuses on developing automated test and measurement solutions through the innovation of products, recognized as the market leader in Power over Ethernet (PoE) and providing Ethernet physical layer automated test and measurement solutions.
Before launching his company, Mr. Johnson was affiliated with Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Agilent Technologies as an engineering manager for over 20 years, dating back to 1980. During his time at HP, the company spun off its instrument business, which became Agilent Technologies. In his role, Mr. Johnson frequently served as a lead engineer on development projects, focusing on test automation. He was also pivotal in designing advanced automated testing equipment to qualify electronic components, systems and products during the development and manufacturing phases. Earlier in his career, Mr. Johnson spent several years at Polaroid beginning in 1977.
While affiliated with Hewlett-Packard, Mr. Johnson worked in manufacturing, utilizing automated test systems to test medical instruments. This foundation role enabled him to introduce several innovations before being tasked with managing a team of automation engineers to develop similar systems for use throughout manufacturing and in the qualification of medical test equipment. Soon after, Mr. Johnson was tasked with establishing a field-based applications engineering operation, focusing on test and measurement instruments rather than medical devices.
Among other accomplishments during his tenure at HP, Mr. Johnson assembled an engineering team to provide consulting and development services for customers early on, creating specialized automation capabilities and test systems for various applications. As both the lead engineer and engineering manager, he worked on high-volume automotive electronics testing systems, including engine controller modules for Ford Motor Company.
In 2004, Mr. Johnson decided to pivot to form Sifos Technologies alongside a former sales engineer from HP. The decision came after Agilent Technologies began downsizing in the U.S. due to electronics manufacturing being moving overseas. The concept for Sifos Technologies was to work with Ethernet and PoE, which was an emerging technology at the time. The company’s goal was to develop systems and software for the qualification of PoE, which enables Ethernet cables to deliver both power and data to devices such as phones, cameras, and wireless access points without requiring a separate power source.
A graduate of Cornell University, Mr. Johnson received a Bachelor of Science in electrical and electronics engineering in 1977. Beyond his degree, he has remained at the forefront of the industry as a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
As Mr. Johnson prepares for the future, he intends to reduce his work hours to a four-day workweek while maintaining his responsibilities at Sifos Technologies. He currently works from home twice a week, a perk that allows him flexibility and has been instrumental in his ability to manage his time more efficiently.
